can help Haitian children Daily life was already tough in Haiti—the poorest country in our western hemisphere—long before the terrible earthquake hit January 12. Amid the new intense headlines about the country’s additional massive emergency needs, an organization called Trinity/HOPE has been quietly feeding desperately hungry Haitian children for the past ten years. Trinity/HOPE—begun here in Sumner County in 1998 to feed 42 Haitian children at a single Christian school—has grown to feeding over 10,000 children daily at 65 schools around Haiti (8 in Port-au-Prince). Such steady growth has been possible through regular support from churches, groups and individuals now spread across 30 U.S. states and Canada. At least ten churches in the Nashville area alone each sponsor a separate school program, including St. Timothy. For many children these daily meals are the only food they get. Although Trinity/HOPE is able to assist with some immediate aid, it is uniquely positioned to provide sustainable help during the long recovery period ahead. The organization already knows Haiti and has a ten-member management team on-site, some of whom functioned as “first responders” during previous disasters. (Our Haitian manager/supervisor in Port-au-Prince is already in place to get funds and supplies into this hardest-hit area as quickly as possible.) We also already have mission trips scheduled for March and April to help serve and monitor recovery, as well as our school programs’ progress and results. As soon as schools reopen, Trinity/HOPE will be adding eight more feeding programs—two in Port-au-Prince—which means almost 12,000 students at 73 schools will get daily food. But the demand is expected to escalate. With all the death, destruction and despair brought on by the earthquake, it’s likely that more children than ever will flock to these schools with regular, dependable feeding programs. Funds are needed not only to keep these new school programs going but to feed additional children and to add more locations. Of course, increased Christian school enrollment will mean more Haitian children will not only receive an education, they’ll hear about and feel firsthand the love of Christ. In a country where 65% of the people practice voodoo, it’s heartwarming to hear 90–95% of the children at our schools tell you they believe in Jesus Christ and 60–70% of their parents have come to do so as well. All Trinity/HOPE donations are fully tax-deductible and are used solely to support these programs to feed children in Haiti. 2010 Ministry Focuses
