Education and Arts

Education and Arts LogoAbout E & A

As part of its mission of service and outreach, St. Timothy initiated the annual Education and Arts series in 2008–09 to offer free first-class presentations to its surrounding community. Topics and presenters are chosen to offer fresh insights for daily faith while representing a variety of interests and a broad faith perspective.

All are welcome to attend; a nursery for babies and toddlers is provided at all events. Each program may include a brief ecumenical devotional and a reception to meet the presenter/s.

This creative faith series is made possible by St. Timothy and through generous donations by those who believe in the value of education and the arts.

Please call the church office (615) 824-6244 for additional information, to request other assistance, or to indicate nursery needs.

Reel Faith: Bringing Christianity to Cinema

How does one combine their passion for filmmaking with their faith, beliefs, and values?

In the world of social media, surrounded by the YouTube generation, two brothers and enterprising entrepreneurs who call themselves "faith-based visual enthusiasts" formed their video production company.  In this E&A event, Matthew and Scott Pessoni will explore today's films and media from a Christian story-telling perspective.  If you have ever attended a movie, watched television, or seen a professionally-produced web video, you will NOT want to miss this presentation.

Sanctified Seeing: An Introduction to Visual Piety

Christians believe that God came to humans in the likeness of their own form and flesh. Theologians, pondering the meaning of this, have argued that perceiving the divine presence with the eye was as important as attending to the divine message with the ear. This lecture will briefly survey the orthodox theology of the image (icon) and consider the ways that today's Christians are recovering the spiritual practice of seeing.
